History of Angelite
Angelite is a soft blue to blue-gray mineral variety of anhydrite, a calcium sulfate formed when gypsum undergoes dehydration under pressure over long geological periods. Its name, “Angelite,” was popularized in the late 20th century due to its gentle coloration and strong association with angelic and higher-realm symbolism in metaphysical traditions.
Geological Formation and Discovery
Angelite forms in sedimentary environments where gypsum deposits are subjected to intense pressure, causing the water content to be expelled and transforming the mineral into anhydrite. Major deposits are found in Peru, which remains the primary commercial source, as well as parts of Mexico, Poland, Germany, and Egypt. Although anhydrite itself has been known to science since the 18th century, the pale blue variety now called Angelite was not widely recognized or marketed until much later.
Historical Awareness and Early Use
Historically, anhydrite was valued mainly for industrial purposes, including cement production and soil conditioning. The blue variety was often overlooked or grouped with other calcium sulfate minerals. There is no strong evidence of Angelite being used as a distinct stone in ancient civilizations; however, blue stones in general were revered by cultures such as the Egyptians and Mesopotamians for their perceived connection to the heavens, divine communication, and protection.
Modern Recognition and Metaphysical Adoption
Angelite gained prominence in the metaphysical and crystal healing communities during the 1980s and 1990s. Its soft blue color and calming energy led practitioners to associate it with angels, spirit guides, and higher consciousness. It became especially popular for meditation, spiritual communication, and emotional soothing, and was linked primarily to the Throat Chakra, Third Eye Chakra, and higher transpersonal chakras.
Contemporary Significance
Today, Angelite is valued almost exclusively for its metaphysical qualities rather than industrial use. It is commonly shaped into tumbled stones, spheres, palm stones, and carvings. Due to its softness and sensitivity to water, it is handled gently and cared for with intention. Angelite remains a symbol of peace, compassion, and divine connection in modern crystal practices.
